Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment together with Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Group, SanDisk, and Western Digital recently announced details on Project Phoenix, a possible threat to Netfix and Hulu. This is the latest initiative which has been aimed to offer a faster and easier way for consumers to organized, transfer and tore high definition TV shows and movies across various devices. This includes even new releases that have a high quality of up to 1080p. Aside from local storage, users’ content can be backed up by means of cloud-based services along with the UltraViolet industry standard.

According to reports, such project is currently being developed by the SCSA, or the Secure Content Storage Association. This partnership intends to generate and lice solutions which secure high definition content as well as other copyright-protected content on hard drives, USB flash drives, solid state disk drives (SSDs), SD cards, and other flash memory products. When the content has been downloaded to a flash memory product or hard drive, this could consequently be accessed on any SCSA-enabled device, including laptops, TVs, tablets, mobile phones, Blue-ray players or game consoles. Such as optimized content can be simply purchased by means of digital download, kiosks in retail stores, digital files that have been packaged with physical media, as well as other secure digital delivery means.

Such solutions from SCSA are aimed to apply to the industry-backed UltraViolet (UV) ecosystem as well as to be an ideal match for high definition content protection technologies in the future. According to SCSA, these solutions will be widely available this year for licensing. On the whole, the group’s long-term goal is to provide consumers with digital solutions for movies and TV shows which is easy and convenient to use, similar to the DVD and Blu-ray discs.

As such, those who are interested can expect storage of high definition purchased content in a secure digital home library owned by the user himself. The library will include their personal files, such as photos, videos, and music. Such content from a digital library can be simply viewed using a PC, tablet, or TV. Users can also utilize a portable library copy that they can view while on the go or even when a stable Internet connection is not obtainable, such as in cars, planes, or remote locations. With this, the SCSA alliance can be associated with an improved value for consumers all over the world.
